MEA2018 Pre-Conference Activities

The Local Host Committee has arranged some really special famils and tours for MEA2018 delegates to enjoy which can be booked via the registration form.

As well as the famils and activities there are other wonderful options for visitors to Adelaide and delegates to the Conference. Adelaide Oval is offering discounted rates for its famous Roofclimb and Oval Tour (please see booking details below) and the National Wine Centre offers free tours at 11.30am every day.

For those of you feeling adventurous – there are a number of self-guided options which have been developed by the South Australia Tourist Commission and you can learn more about that below.

Adelaide Oval Tours

Adelaide Oval Tours take visitors behind the scenes to discover hidden secrets and relive celebrated moments in the sporting, musical and civic history of this world-famous sporting arena.

Our expert volunteer guides share captivating tales of the history of the venue, the sporting greats who have competed here and the Oval’s iconic status in SA. Each volunteer’s passion for the Oval is infectious while their own unique stories and seasonal changes to the tour paths ensure there is always a new experience to be savoured.

Imagine running onto the iconic Adelaide Oval to the roar of a 50,000-strong crowd, climbing the stairs to the 100-year-old heritage-listed scoreboard or gaining an insight into match-day preparations inside the players’ change-rooms. All of these experiences are included in an Adelaide Oval tour.

Visit a number of areas that are usually inaccessible and learn about the heritage and significance of Adelaide Oval while being entertained with stories of legends and characters who have contributed to the Oval’s rich history.

A tour includes admission to the famed Bradman Collection which tells the story of Australia’s greatest ever cricketer and provides an insight into life in Australia from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Adelaide Oval Roofclimb Take a walk on the wild side!

Be led along the impressive curved roofline of Adelaide Oval’s Western Stand by an experienced RoofClimb Leader before navigating your way across a narrow bridge to the southern Riverbank Stand.

Take in the sights and marvel at the beauty of Adelaide and its surrounds on this two hour sky-high adventure.

Adelaide Oval is pleased to offer MEA2018 a special delegate rate of $52 (normal prices $104).

TIME: 10.30am, 11.30am (limit of 14 pax per climb)


Penfolds Magill Estate Heritage Experience

Penfolds is proud to offer MEA2018 delegates a tour of the historic Magill Estate Winery. Immerse yourself in the history of one of Australia’s oldest, iconic wineries. Walk through the original working winery, explore the vineyards and uncover the historic tales of the underground drives.

To complete the Penfolds experience, a wine tasting at our cellar door is a must. Taste a selection of wines from The Penfolds Collection and the diverse and limited Cellar Reserve range.

DURATION: 45mins
TIMES: 10:00am, 1:00pm and a 3:00pm Mandarin speaking tour
TRANSPORT: Delegates will need to make their own way to the Estate which is located 20 minute drive away from Adelaide Central at 78 Penfold Road, Magill, South Australia, 5072.


Very Jammy – Learn traditional Jam-making in the Adelaide Hills

Fresh cherries, winter jams and quince jelly are part of the rich Adelaide Hills food heritage. Are you terrified of jam, jelly and quince paste recipes?

Making great jam is easy - we’ll show you how. Marble Hill Cherries has over 3000 summer visitors, but we invite you to be one who enjoys a visit in the cooler part of the year. Walk among the fruit trees, and make your own cherry or seasonal jam in our farm kitchen. Head home with 6 full jars, new friends and a jelly cloth.

Includes morning tea of fresh scones and jam tasting, a relaxed Ploughman’s lunch and local wine. We lend aprons, and jam making equipment.

Delegates will be picked-up from and returned to the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Tuesday 8 May

Tuesday Torrens Walk

Join the Committee as they guide you along part of the Torrens River Trail just outside the ACC. The walk is lined with River Red Gums and reed beds, an oasis in the city and suburbs. See some of the local wildlife during the walk and finish your exercise with a complimentary coffee at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

The walk will depart at 7.30am from the main entrance of the ACC and is suitable for all fitness levels, just wear comfortable shoes.

National Wine Centre Tours

The Centre offers a complimentary daily tour of the Wine Discovery Journey, held at 11:30 am. No bookings required — meet at the reception desk.

Another option at the National Wine Centre of is the self-guided Wine Discovery Journey is a state-of-the-art, award-winning interactive wine experience that examines everything from the challenges of winemaking to the pure enjoyment of drinking fine Australian wine.

You’ll learn about the role wine has played in the nation’s history, recognise the position of Australian wine in today's international market and appreciate the relationship between food and wine.


Haighs Chocolate Factory Tours

Join the team at Haighs for a free guided viewing tour to learn the history of Haigh’s and how they make premium quality chocolate from cocoa beans sourced from plantations around the world.

See our team of confectioners using artisan skills to create and hand finish our delicious range of chocolates. Enjoy special chocolate tastings during the tour and complementary tea and coffee at the end of the tour.

Tours operate Monday to Friday between 10.00am and 4.00pm, Saturday between 10.00am and 1.30pm.
